Not all wine is for collecting. Here's what you need to know.
Stop! Don't put every bottle in the wine rack.
Most wine is made to be enjoyed young, while its fruit and freshness are at their best. A everyday bottle isn't a future heirloom — it's dinner. Drink it, enjoy it, and let the special bottles earn their shelf space.
What Makes a Wine Age-Worthy?
Not every wine is built to last. The ones that can age gracefully share a few key traits — the building blocks that let a wine evolve rather than fade:
- Acidity — Helps preserve the wine and keeps it fresh over the years. Bright, structured acids are the backbone of any bottle meant to go the distance.
- Tannin — Gives structure and softens over time. Those grippy, mouth-coating tannins in a young red are exactly what will melt into silk with a few years of patience.
- Concentration — More flavour and depth to evolve. A thin wine has nowhere to go; a concentrated one has layers that slowly unfurl.
- Sometimes Sugar — Helps balance and adds ageing potential. A touch of residual sugar, in the right wines, acts as a preservative and adds richness with age.
Ageing doesn't automatically make a wine better.
It makes an age-worthy wine different — and hopefully more complex. A simple fruity bottle designed for Friday night doesn't become Château Margaux because you forgot about it under the stairs 😉. Ageing rewards the right wines; it doesn't rescue the wrong ones.
